After three years of non-stop travel through Europe, we moved back to the US and landed in Portland. We stayed with friends while we figured out the next chapter. A couple of weeks in, it was Michelle’s birthday, and we wanted our own space for a night. Something on the water. Something that felt like the getaway we’d been putting off since coming home.
So we booked a place on Hayden Island, rented a boat on the Columbia River, and made ceramic mugs in a creative studio. A one-night Portland birthday that was equal parts “vacation” and “welcome to your new city.”
Finding a birthday stay in Portland
A place on North Marine Drive at the edge of Hayden Island, right on the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington. Not central Portland. Not the neighborhoods you’d normally book. But when the point of your stay is getting on the water, being ten steps from the river is the whole idea.
What we did for the birthday
Boat rental on the Columbia. That was the main event. Blue-sky August day, the water working exactly the way summer promises. Later, we went to a creative studio and made ceramic mugs. Ours came home with us and became the mugs we drank coffee from every morning for the next few years. Not bad for a one-day stay.
Dinner somewhere on Hayden Island. Sunset over the river. The kind of birthday that reminds you that a new city, when you commit to it, starts giving you birthdays worth remembering.
Portland: our verdict after a birthday on the water
Portland became home for three years. This one-night birthday stay was the moment we started to feel like Oregon locals instead of visitors passing through friends’ guest rooms.
If you’re new to Portland (or planning to be), do the river thing at least once. The Columbia is right there, and most people who live in Portland forget it exists.
