Camano is what Whidbey would be if fewer people knew about it. A quiet island in Puget Sound, connected to the mainland by a bridge, home to eagles, cedar trees, and a specific brand of Pacific Northwest silence you can’t find in Seattle proper.
We drove up from Portland with Walter and Olive to celebrate Lance’s birthday. Three days on the south end of the island, no plans, no phones, no reason to check either.
Finding a waterfront place on South Breezy Point, Camano Island
A place on South Breezy Point Road, right on the water on the south end of the island. Cedar walls, a fireplace, a deck facing the water, and enough trees that we didn’t see another building the whole weekend. The kind of Airbnb where you close the door and forget you have a phone.
Breezy Point sits on the quieter, less-developed south end of Camano, looking out over Port Susan. Wildlife everywhere. Eagles, herons, seals if you’re lucky, and the specific slow tide of Puget Sound that turns a beach walk into a two-hour disappearing act.
What we did on Camano
Not much on purpose. Walked the beach at low tide. Made coffee slowly in the morning. Drove the length of the island (it takes maybe 40 minutes) to see the small towns and roadside farm stands. Cooked most meals at home because that’s what a place like this is for.
Played Uno on the deck for hours. That’s the actual review. If your weekend can end with a card game on a deck facing Puget Sound, you booked correctly.
Camano: our verdict after 3 days on Breezy Point
Camano isn’t a destination. It’s a reset. If you’re anywhere in the Pacific Northwest and need a couple of nights of quiet, this is the answer. And if you can get a place on the water on the south end, that’s the version to book.
